Chapter One

17 stone. Three boys. Zero triathlons.

Pete running on bridge at World Championships in GBR kit

Pete Pastides had built successful businesses. Raised three sons. Achieved everything society told him was important.

But at 50, overweight and unfit, he faced a choice most people his age never make: accept the slow decline everyone expects, or discover what happens when you refuse to.

"There are thousands of books to help you age well and feel good. This is not one of them. This is a book about staying fast, getting stronger and pushing performance long after 50."

Chapter Two

From boardroom to start line. In 12 months.

Within a year of his first triathlon, Pete earned GB selection. Not through natural talent. Not through a lifetime of training. Through the same relentless goal-setting and execution that built his businesses.

The book takes you inside every decision, every early morning, every moment of doubt, and the framework that turned "too old" into a competitive advantage.

Chapter Three

World Championships. European medals. After 50.

Pete exiting the swim at World Championships in GBR wetsuit

European Sprint Triathlon Championships in Munich. World Super-Sprint Triathlon, Standard Aquathlon and Long Course Aquabike Championships in Spain. Top-10 finishes against the best in the world. Multiple medals, all earned after 50.

But the medals are not the point. They are proof of what becomes possible when you reject society's beliefs about age and capability.

This book shows you exactly how it was done, so you can apply the same principles to your own life.

My Greatest Motivation

To Elliott, Owen and Will

To my sons Elliott, Owen and Will. Thank you for getting me moving, for being the inspiration to not be that Dad who had a big belly, drank too much, and valued comfort over adventure. I'm so grateful you entered my life and changed its direction forever, for the better.

To My Biggest Fan

To Lisa

To my sister Lisa. Thank you for coming with me to every European and World event, for always being by my side, always having my back, and always being in my corner. I love you more than I can ever put into words.

Why Read This Book

Extend Your Healthspan, Not Just Your Lifespan

With the convergence of Artificial Intelligence, BioTech and Quantum computing our lifespans are going to increase dramatically, but what about our healthspan? The quality of those extra years we'll gain matters far more than the quantity. When I talk to people about the very real possibility that in the next decade, if we can stay alive, we could double our lifespan, they look at me with utter dread. "I don't want to be 125 and unable to walk," they immediately respond.

The assumption that longer life automatically means longer decline is fundamentally flawed. We have more control over how we age than most people realise. If you read this book and apply what you learn, you will exponentially increase your chances of extending your healthspan to match your lifespan.

Picture this: at 85, you're not just able to get on the ground and wrestle with your great-grandchildren — you're taking them for mountain hikes, ocean swims, morning runs, and cycling adventures. You're the ancestor who shows up with energy, strength, and vitality, not the one who needs to be cared for.

The science is clear: the human body is remarkably adaptable, even in what society considers "old age." Muscle mass can be rebuilt, cardiovascular capacity can be restored, flexibility can be regained, and cognitive function can be enhanced well into our later decades.

But here's the catch — it requires intentional action, not wishful thinking. There are thousands of books promising to help you "age gracefully" and "feel comfortable." This is emphatically not one of them. Graceful ageing and comfortable living are fine goals, but they're not the ceiling of what's possible.

This book is a front-row seat to what happens when a 17-stone businessman in his forties decides not to wind down with the conventional wisdom of middle age, but instead to see how far his body and mind can actually go when pushed with purpose and precision. The journey you're about to witness culminates in something most would consider impossible: multiple elite world and European triathlon medals in one of the most demanding sports on the planet.

This isn't a story about natural athletic ability or a lifetime of training — quite the opposite. Inside twelve months, this journey runs from never having completed a triathlon to standing on the start line of the 2022 European Sprint Championships in Munich as a legitimate competitor, then progressing to a debut at the World Super-Sprint Championships the following year and securing a top-10 finish against the world's best athletes in the age group.

But the medals aren't the point — they're simply proof of concept. They demonstrate what becomes achievable when you reject society's limiting beliefs about age and capability, when you stop making excuses, and when you start treating your body like the high-performance machine it was designed to be, regardless of how many years it's been in service.

This is Book 1 of the PerformAfter50 series and it shares that complete transformation journey and the hard-earned lessons extracted from it, so you can set your own audacious goals, execute them with precision, and discover what is truly possible in what I call the third phase of life.

This is the phase where you stop merely surviving the passing years and start crossing finish lines you once thought were beyond your reach. It's where you transform from someone who talks about what they used to be able to do, to someone who's actively discovering what they're still capable of becoming.

The Power of a Clear Goal

Turning Dreams into Homes, Security, and Health

I believe setting a goal gives you a sense of purpose. It gives the future meaning and transforms abstract dreams into concrete stepping stones toward a life of intention. Without goals, we drift through our days reactive rather than proactive, responding to whatever life throws at us instead of actively shaping our destiny.

For me, when I started my career at 19, it was all about independence. That first goal was beautifully simple yet profoundly motivating: earn and save enough money to buy a house. I could visualise exactly what that meant — no more rent payments disappearing into someone else's pocket, no more asking permission to hang a picture or paint a wall. Every overtime hour, every skipped luxury purchase, every dollar saved brought me closer to that front door key that would represent true independence.

Then I started my own company, and suddenly the goal shifted and expanded. Now it wasn't just about shelter — it was about security and growth. The goal then became paying off the mortgage entirely. I'll never forget the day I made that final payment. The sense of accomplishment was intoxicating, but more importantly, it freed up mental space and financial resources for the next chapter.

With the mortgage conquered, my focus turned to my sons' futures. The goal became banking enough money to ensure their educations were completely secure, no matter which schools or colleges they chose or what paths they decided to pursue. I wanted them to have opportunities I never had, to make choices based on passion rather than financial limitations. Every business decision I made was filtered through this lens: would this help me build the education fund that would give my boys freedom to follow their dreams?

Once I'd achieved those financial milestones — house owned outright, education funds fully loaded — something interesting happened. I reached a crossroads that many people face but few have the luxury to fully explore. I made the decision to sell the company and completely change the direction of my life, transitioning from finance goals to fitness goals. It wasn't just about the money anymore; it was about health, and discovering what I was truly capable of in the second half of my life.

My goal wasn't simply to maintain the status quo or accept the limitations that society often places on those who have reached this milestone age. Instead, I wanted to demonstrate that it's entirely possible to reinvent yourself, pursue ambitious dreams, and create tangible improvements in your life circumstances regardless of your age.

Specifically, I aimed to transform and prioritise my physical and mental health in ways I had perhaps neglected during the busier decades of career building and family raising. This wasn't about proving something to others, but rather about proving to myself that the dreams I had carried for years could still become reality with the right mindset, clear planning, and consistent action.
