How My Sons Changed My Health Forever

I've been reflecting lately on the moment everything changed, and it wasn't dramatic. There was no life-threatening health scare, no doctor delivering sobering news, no wake-up call from a mirror. It was simply three young boys, full of life and possibility, watching their father navigate middle age.
The Comfortable Path
Elliott, Owen and Will never asked me to transform my life. They didn't sit me down for an intervention or express disappointment in my choices. They simply existed, radiating energy and curiosity, while I stood at a crossroads that many fathers face but few discuss openly.
I could see the path ahead clearly – the comfortable dad trajectory. A few extra pounds settling around my middle, the evening drinks becoming more frequent, the sofa becoming more appealing than adventure. It's a well-worn path, socially acceptable, even expected. Society tells us that's what happens to men in their forties and fifties. We settle. We slow down. We prioritise comfort over challenge.
The Silent Teaching Moment
But children are incredible observers. They're watching, learning, absorbing lessons about what it means to age, what it means to be a man, what it means to face the passage of time. I realised I was about to teach them something I didn't want them to learn – that getting older means giving up, that middle age is about limitation rather than possibility.
That awareness hit me like a revelation. I didn't want to be the father who demonstrated that life contracts with age. I wanted to show them the opposite – that we can expand, grow, discover new capabilities, and chase dreams at any stage of life.
The Ripple Effect of Choice
This shift in perspective didn't just change my waistline or my fitness levels. It transformed my entire relationship with possibility. It led me from hockey pitches to CrossFit boxes, from boardrooms to triathlon start lines. Each new challenge became a demonstration to my sons that growth doesn't have an expiration date.
The most powerful accountability partners are often the ones who love us unconditionally. They deserve the best version of ourselves, not because they demand it, but because they're learning what's possible by watching how we choose to live.
