Strategic Training Beats Raw Volume After 50

Strategic Training Beats Raw Volume After 50

The Volume Trap

I remember the exact moment I realised I was training like an idiot. It was after yet another niggling injury had derailed my preparation, and I was sitting in my kitchen, frustrated and honestly questioning whether this whole athletic pursuit after 50 was just a midlife fantasy gone wrong.

The problem wasn't my age—it was my approach. I was trying to out-train athletes half my age using their methods. More volume, more intensity, more sessions. If they were doing 12 hours a week, surely I needed 15 to compensate for being older?

I was fighting against my age instead of fighting with it.

The Wisdom Revolution

That evening, something shifted in my thinking. What if my 50+ body wasn't a limitation to overcome, but a sophisticated tool I'd spent decades developing? What if all those years of living, moving, and experiencing had created something invaluable: genuine body wisdom?

I started paying attention differently. Not to what the training plan said I should feel, but to what my body was actually telling me. The difference between good tiredness and warning fatigue. Between muscle adaptation and potential injury. Between pushing through and pushing too far.

Our bodies after 50 have developed remarkable feedback systems. We know things about effort, recovery, and adaptation that younger athletes are still learning. The question is: are we listening?

Strategic Becomes Superior

The transformation in my training was dramatic once I embraced strategic over brutal. Recovery became part of the plan, not something I hoped would happen. Quality sessions replaced junk miles. I started training with the precision that comes from understanding my body's true signals.

The results? Multiple World and European Championship qualifications. Better performances than when I was trying to out-volume everyone else. Fewer injuries. More enjoyment.

This wasn't about training less—it was about training smarter. Using the wisdom that comes with age instead of fighting against it.

Your Body Knows

If you're over 50 and pushing yourself through training plans designed for different bodies, different ages, different lives—stop. Listen instead. Your body has spent decades learning. It knows when you're truly tired versus just being mentally lazy. It can distinguish between productive discomfort and warning pain.

The strategic athlete doesn't do more—they do better. And at our age, better always beats more.
